Quick overview

Pioneer TORAIZ AS-1 is a brand new analogue synthesizer for both studio and stage use. Built in collaboration with Dave Smith Instruments, this synthesizer borrows circuitry and effects from the Prophet-6 synth and combines then with all new features, such as an arpeggiator, step sequencer and touchpad-style keyboard to create a beautifully original analogue synth that can create powerful basses and bright, vibrant leads.

To stay ahead in the DJ industry it is imperative to combine DJ performances with live instruments and music production, as a result Pioneer has developed the ultimate TORAIZ AS-1 monophonic synthesizer.

Pioneer has crafted a new analogue synthesizer in collaboration with Dave Smith Instruments for music production and live performances, introducing the TORAIZ AS-1, the second musical instrument in the TORAIZ series that brings a whole new range of creative possibilities to the studio or stage.

Based on the discrete analogue circuitry of Dave Smith Instruments Prophet-6 synthesizer, the AS-1 synth is guided by a fully programmable, true analogue engine. After carefully working with the legend Dave Smith himself, Pioneer has built a synthesizer that produces powerful analogue sounds and is an ideal addition to the set-ups of professional and aspiring producers and DJs.

Pioneers experience in making DJ equipment, and production gear has significantly influenced the development of the new synthesizers user interface and performance features. The intuitive controls include parameter knobs that allow you to make both subtle and dynamic changes to the tone of your music, creating your own personalised sound. The touchpad-style keyboard and slider mean you can manipulate sounds during performances on-the-fly, and it is ultra-easy to manipulate the seven on-board effects which come from the Prophet-6 synth along with the addition of a brand new digital distortion.

The TORAIZ AS-1 synthesizer and TORAIZ SP-16 live sampler can be connected via MIDI and uses the sampler’s sophisticated sequencer to create even more intricate patterns with the vibrant and powerful analogue sounds you have made inside the synthesiser. The two instruments can be connected to your DJM mixer via Pro DJ Link and MIDI, creating a unique set-up where the CDJs play the tracks. The TORAIZ SP-16 Sampler adds in loops and one-shots, and the TORAIZ AS-1 Synth plays one-of-a-kind analogue leads, in sync with the BPM of the music.

Key Features of the TORAIZ AS-1:

True Analogue Sounds from Dave Smith Instruments Prophet-6.
Creating your own fat basses and exciting leads has never been so appealing thanks to the synthesis engine at the very core of the TORAIZ AS-1, which is based on the analogue circuitry of Dave Smith Instruments’ Prophet-6 synthesizer. The AS-1 features two voltage-controlled oscillators (VCO) with continuously variable triangle, sawtooth and pulse wave shapes. These can be further sculpted using the two voltage-controlled filters (VCF), which have also been depicted from the Prophet-6: a 4-pole, resonant low-pass filter that can be self-oscillated and a 2-pole, resonant high-pass filter.

Full programmability and 495 presets.
The AS-1 synth allows you to create one-of-a-kind sounds using two voltage-controlled oscillators, two voltage-controlled filters, one voltage-controlled amplifier, two envelope generators and one low-frequency oscillator. You can then save each sound and it's parameter settings so you can access them later. The synthesizer comes with 495 preset programs for inspiration; each patch comes with a different sound set-up plus 64-step sequence that can be edited independently. Alongside this, you can save up to 495 of your own patches in the five user banks and can assign up to 13 patches as “Quick Programs” to each key on the keyboard and instantly recall them at any time.

FX from the Dave Smith Instruments Prophet-6 Synthesiser.
The dual effects engine has been derived from the Prophet-6. Add a single effect or pair together to add extra texture to your sounds. A true bypass function preserves a pure analogue signal path.

  • FX1: Ring Modulation, Bucket Brigade Delay and Distortion.
  • FX2: Hi-resonance Phaser, Lo-resonance Phaser and Maestro Phaser and Chorus.

Intuitive User Interface and Performance Features.
A touchpad-style keyboard and slider allow you to create unique sounds and phrases. Harness your creativity using features such as the 64-step sequencer, arpeggiator and Scale Mode, adding more possibilities to your performance.

  • Keyboard and Scale Mode: Perform with the sounds you’ve created with the touchpad-style keyboard and use Scale Mode to choose from any of the 21 onboard scales and alter the notes assigned to the keys. This means you don’t need an extensive understanding of musical theory, simply select the scale you want to play and the TORAIZ AS-1 keeps you in perfect harmony.
  • Slider: Moving your finger up and down the slider manipulates your choice of seven parameters, allowing you to add even more dynamics to your performance. This slider is about to become one of the most essential tools in your live performances.
  • Arpeggiator: The arpeggiator performs a repeating chord pattern by holding on to notes on the keyboard. Then change it in real time, by octave or by changing its key in semitones. Experiment with different scales or match the scale of a track that’s playing.
  • 64-step sequencer: Using the 64-step sequencer you can step record patterns and change the musical key of a pattern in real time. Quickly find inspiration from a preset sequence pattern and use the Sequence Lock so you can play the keyboard and quickly edit the sound without ruining the pattern that’s playing.

The Toraiz AS-1 can create custom sequence patterns up to 64-steps as well as each preset coming with its own default sequence pattern, ideal for those wishing to get down ideas quickly. Also, why not use the sequencer to trigger and sequence clock based instruments in your DAW.

Using The Sequencer

The intuitive slider acts more than just a mod or pitch wheel but everything and more. Control filter and effects levels with pinpoint accuracy with this touch-sensitive slider. Turn latch on to activate and hold your desired level of modulation - perfect for adding individuality to your live performances.

Slider

Easily change octaves with your up and down control buttons that allow you to shift your patch to your desired pitch range. Holding shift will allow you to change a semitone up or down. Make use of the miscellaneous key mode that help to take this beyond being just a standard monophonic synth with 5 key modes.

Keys and Octaves

The As-1 inherits the same modulation control parameters as found on Dave Smith's legendary Prophet 5 and 6 series synths. Choose between two modulation sources and five modulation outputs. Sure to be a favourite amongst sound designers.

Modulation

Assign up to 13 presets to each key for quick call back, this is super handy for live performances especially as you may need to access presets quickly. Or maybe in the studio you want to have your favourite presets on hand if you wish to reuse cool instruments in multiple tracks.

Quick Program

As with any professional standard synthesiser you can assign MIDI information to be received via the MIDI in for other external synths or for computer-based synths you can do all this with a USB cable. Ideal for live performers looking to easily insert another synth into their arsenal.

MIDI

Connect from an external keyboards' MIDI out to the AS-1's MIDI in with Controller mode activated in order to play the AS-1's presets with another device. Perfect for live performance situations.

Connecting External MIDI Devices

If you have a MIDI device that features aftertouch functionality you can control the 6 different effects dependant on the pressure in which you play from an external device. Add accents to your performances instantly, a this is a standout feature of the AS-1 synth for those looking for more than just playback of presets. Why not use the feature and record aftertouch via the automation feature inside a DAW to add greater variation to your tracks.

Aftertouch

The AS-1 was made in collaboration with Dave Smith instruments much like the SP-16 sampler and sequencer. This is one truly dynamic partnership when the two units are connected via MIDI. Select a preset from the AS-1 synth and sequence melodies in a defined scale or mode if you select one from the SP-16's intuitive scale mode. Control the AS-1's modulation effect direct from the SP-16,

Using With The SP-16

The trigger function allows you to connect external devices to control and play the functions of the AS-1 including the sequencer and arpeggiator. Why not connect a foot pedal or external audio source to control this functionality. In addition, modular users will be excited to hear you can control with a control voltage gate from a modular rack. A highly impressive function indeed.

Trigger

Send the AS-1's Low freuency oscillator to various destinations to create modulation effects such as tremelo, wah-wah and vibrato. Modulate the the frequency, cut off, shape, and filter of the two built-in oscillators. Or why not send the LFO via MIDI to effect an external synthesiser. Sound designers will be excited by this very capable feature and is sure to bring a new dimension to a designers creative process.

LFO

Sequence the fantastic arpeggiator across 3 octaves for incredible sonic output. Couple with the added arp controls time division, speed and order of the sequence. Fantstic for adding arpeggiation to another instruments perhaps over MIDI or inside your DAW.

Arpeggiator

Sound designers from the globe have given their input and created five user banks. Use these presets insdie your DAW, layer with other synths for interesting textures. Resample in audio format and drastically modulate a sound for a different effect. The possibilities are endless and really are only limited by your imagination.

Presets

Use the effects derived from Prophet-6 synthesiser to add even more modulation capability to your arsenal. Effects include; Bucket-Brigade Delay, Chorus, Phaser, Ring Modulator and Distortion. Use in music production or live performance, this effect engine is one of incredible power and capability.

FX

The AS-1's incredible filter and amp envelopes can be controlled via the control parameter function, you can also control these simultaneously for added harmonic modulation. Adjust the attack, decay, sustain, and release direct from the hardware for greater control over the entire shape of the sound, perfect for inserting the synth in a desired frequency range whether in a live performance or in the studio. Automate in-realtime inside your DAW for subtle variation.

Envelopes

The Toraiz AS-1's oscillators are manufactured by world-renowned synthesiser creators, Dave Smith Instruments and are inherited from the famous Prophet-6 synthesiser. A longtime favourite of electronic music producers from around the world. See how you can use the AS-1 to create complex waveforms and add even more harmonic distortion to the overtones of a sound. Live performers could lose hours creating sounds and music producers could build an extensive collection of samples all from just this synthesiser.
